These paintings are based on children's "thank you" letters that I (or more truthfully, my wife) receive after family visits. We all remember having to write them: desperately trying to think of something to say, dreading the awful task of writing in best handwriting. I treasure them because they tell us much more than their written message. By painting them objectively like a still life, the writing is replaced by painted marks. The less legible these become, the more they say.
