John Hicks  Artist and Lecturer

Painting by Numbers: 1 (May 2000). Ink jet print, acrylic paint, paper 30 cm X 42 cm.

This 2D piece concluded my installation work and rekindled my interest in painting.  I worked at the beautiful Goldwell Park in Newbury, Hampshire (UK).  Visitors were each asked to choose a colour from the grass and flowers within a rectangle I'd marked out on the site. They then matched these to shade cards, which were pegged back into the rectangle, bearing their name and telephone number.

In my studio I drew out the rectangle on a print of the park, applying their selected colours in acrylic paint on the right place in the grid. This spoof landscape was later presented to one of the participants, selected at random from their shade cards, which I'd placed in a hat.
