| I've
been trying to use more line
in my painting. Lines appear
naturally in my mixed media life
drawing), but are lost under applied colour. Without line
(especially
outline) my vocabulary of painted marks is limited to describing form
and
surface, so I've got to find a way to convey meaning as well.
Both outline and silhouette
dominate our
ability to recognise things - which must be why silhouettes feature in
books on bird and aeroplane spotting! White Garden began as an
over-complicated
monochrome version of Finger-painted Garden which I repeatedly
applied
and removed for two days, until the paper began to disintegrate.
Finally
I lost patience, smeared over the finicky leaves and branches with
thick
white oil pastel. To my amazement this left soft, descriptive
"outlines",
which I enhanced by scratching away the wax. I'm now painting from this
drawing to see if I can emphasize line - and introduce colour as well.
