John Hicks Artist and Lecturer

The  painting "Dark Garden" is a rejection of the synthetic quality of acrylic, which has encouraged me to make my own paint from stuff around the house: soot from the chimney, ash from the grate and garden bonfires, blended with PVA as a binder.  This paint is now steeped in personal association - but does have the drawback of changing colour as it dries - and it stinks as it dries, too.  But soot proved an ideal medium to build up the tactile markers necessary for this current series.

These  paintings don't seem to need frames, demanding that the black continues to the side of the canvas - but has a black border in this illustration.
