STILL LIFE: FLINTS AND GRASS

Spring 2004. The garden's still uncultivated, allowing ample time to work from the flints and detritus that litter the surface. A promising start, making drawings and oil studies from direct observation, but finding it increasingly difficult to work out what I want from this subject.

Its the old problem of when to stop. My best work seems to be done quickly, but this gives me least satisfaction. The alternative is to carry on with the same painting (Flints and Grass 2) until it becomes a chore. Keeping a photographic record of the various stages (Flints and Grass 1) is essential but tantalizing, showing me  what I've lost. Click on the thumbnails to see enlargements .
