These are details from a large charcoal study, to isolate the shapes of flints and grasses exposed on bare earth. An eraser produced the white drawing lines in the first study, which also created layers  in the outcrops of grass. Once again I was struck by the similarity to writing and signs in these marks. Used a computer to produce the second, negative image, which established the relationships of spaces to lines. This was so like a painting I didn't feel the need to actually paint from it.
