"Monochrome Window"
Mixed media on canvas, 67 X 47 cm.
Overpainted September 2001
Detail
A visit to the British Library to see The Lie of the Land exhibition: a gorgeous display of maps  that reawakened my interest in drawing.  Those cartographers made maps in every conceivable medium, blurring the boundary between drawing and painting in a way that has made me think twice about what painting means to me. See Maps.
"Monochrome Window" is a preparatory drawing on canvas for an unsuccessful work, which I've destroyed.  I liked the drawing so much I nailed it to a panel with brass studs, realise now that these studs created tensions in the suspended canvas that related closely to the grid of the window, like struts supporting a kite.
